ARCHER, FRED
When Adam Was a Boy
Hodder & Stoughton, London, 1979. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Near Fine. 9780340248256 The year is 1911 in Ayshon, the Evesham Vale village tucked under Bredon Hill. It was the year young Adam left school and went to work as a sovereign a month plough boy for Mr Bushell at Manor Farm. `A tidy bwoy' they reckoned him, working two horses and a plough high on Bredon Hill at the age of thirteen. It was a significant year, too, for the partnership of Bowman and Carter. They rented fifteen acres nine hundred feet up on Bredon Hill, spread bag muck, and grew brussel sprouts where nobody thought you could. But that was only a start for the ambitious market gardeners turned farmers who came to settle on the Ayshon land. In the summer of 1911 there was a notable drought and a coronation. Both produced untoward events in the Vale and Fred Bushell gathered his neighbours to build a bean rick by moonlight. Ayshon acquired not one but two rival cricket clubs in the year 1911; and in 1911 the old Shepherd Chandler died. Fred Archer, whose own father appears in his story as Tom Bowman, follows Ayshon through this particular year month by month, following the round of the farming calendar, recalling old country seasonal customs and conjuring a range of memorable characters and moments, from the cowman who shouts `Charge' behind the hedge at a retired Boer War plough horse, to the smart market gardener in his `tea-drinker' town boots, and the old shepherd with his blood and nicotine-stained whiskers among the young tups Size: Octavo (standard book size). 189 pages. in archive acetate film protection. Dust Jacket un-clipped. Gilt titles spine. black cloth; illustrated by b/w. photo's.. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 500 grams.
