Graphic Illustrations of Warwickshire
Birmingham, Beilby, Knott and Beilby. 1829, First. (ISBN: No ISBN) Contemp Straight Grain Morocco, Folio. Ill.: Westall, Dewint, Barber and Others. The head of the spine is chipped with loss; the spine is rubbed and the gilt is dulled; the corners are bumped and worn; there is some chafing to the edges of the boards, and a rather crudely repaired gouge to the upper board, and two smaller gouges which are bare of leather. Joints and hinges are firm, and there is an armorial bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, it is on the whole a very fresh bright and tight copy with some light occasional foxing. VIVIAN BIRD
Warwickshire
London England, B. T. Bastford, 1982. Reprint, Binding: Cloth, Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall 0713400765 Hardback Hardback. Ex-libris name sticker to inside cover. Stratford-upon-Avon, Compton Wynyates, Kenilworth Castle, Henly-in-Arden, Ragley Hall, Warwick: these are the places traditionally associated with Warwickshire. Yet the author shows in this book, the country has much more to offer than the ordinary tourist ever sees. It is as much the biographical and historical association, however, as the purely topographical aspects of the county with which Mr. Bird is here concerned: Dr. Jephson and Leamington's rise as a spa; the Civil War battle at Edgehill; the royal visits, as expensive as they were honourable to the hosts, in particular Queen Elizabeth I's to Kenilworth; and a list of worthies which is diverse and distinguished, and includes Shakespeare of course, Joseph Arch, Michael Drayton, Piers Gaveston, Thomas Arnold, Keith Holyoake, Arthur Hugh Clough, and Rupert Brooke. With its 31 excellent illustrations and map this is an originaly and delightful contribution to the bibliography of Warwickshire. Illustrated. 216 pp.
