MACIVER, EVANDER (EDITED BY REV. GEORGE HENDERSON)

Edinburgh, Printed By T.&A.Constable. 1905, 1st Edition. Quarter Leather, 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. xv+354p. frontispiece portrait + 6 photogravure platesand list of subscribers. According to (scourie dot co uk), Lord Reay sold the estate including Scourie in 1829 to the Duke of Sutherland with the Clearances in full swing. He wrote: there is no duty I performed during my services as factor in Sutherland on which I look back with more satisfaction than the time, trouble and care I expended in carrying out the transportation of so many families from the poor position of crofters in a wet climate and a poor soil for cultivation to the more fertile lands of Canada, Nova Scotia and Australia. Presentation note on prelims to Peter MacKay Clashfearn from D.D.M.McIver (Evander's son?) and dates of MacIvers 1811-1903 - factor for 50 years to 3 sucessive" Dukes of Sutherland" on half title. Rebound some while ago in blue leather with blue cloth boards. Top edge gilt and gilt titling on spine. Book tight and clean though some toning and occasional rmarks in text. A little foxing on prelims. Boards clean but with a little corner wear. See scans and email for more.. Very Good.
