Smuggling was rife along the Sussex coast in the first half of the 19th century and it created a scandal when landowner George Henty, from Ferring, was arrested and accused of smuggling large quantities of gin in 1818. The conviction was quashed "under suspicious circumstances". Henty claimed his conviction was due to false evidence. A very clean copy.

Captain Warner wanted a very large sum of money from the Government to carry out experiments/trials on his "invisible shells" and "long range" projectiles ...

Covers the inland and coastal resorts of Kent starting at Woolwich, Sussex, starting with Brighton through to Portsmouth and Southampton. Undated, but 1838 deduced from references in the text. Texts in three gatherings of 284, 56, and 120pp each. 56 plates in all most interspersed in the relevant texts but others gathered at the back without texts covering London, The Isle of Wight and as far west as Bristol, Torquay and Falmouth. All texts are clean, some of the plates show signs of ageing. An unusual item and scarce. Good Plus.
