Lessons on Shells, as given to children between the ages of eight and ten, in a Pestalozzian School, at Cheam, Surrey, by the author of "Lessons on Objects" illustrated by ten plates, drawn from nature, Third Edition,
London, Seeley, Burnside, and Seeley, 1846 with 10 black and white plates of shells, 12mo. 163mm by 111mm. (pp. 228), Victorian full green calf, spine decorated in gilt in compartments between raised bands, contrasting dark red leather lettering-piece on spine, sides with wide gilt borders, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, Elizabeth Mayo, 1793 - 1865, educational reformer, joined Charles Mayo helping him in the instruction of boys and in applying the principles of Pestalozzi to English education, at Cheam in Surrey. During this time she wrote the work by which her name is best known 'Lessons on Objects' followed by 'Lessons on Shells.' A very good copy, spine slightly rubbed, corner of lettering-piece chipped but binding sound, some foxing to plates but contents generally clean, no inscriptions or markings, still a pretty looking copy.
