[ MATTHEWS, REV. S. J.] .
Saint Bartholomew Ipswich. Blotter Year-Book 1947/8 .
Bedford: Published by D. S. Martell, 2 Park Avenue, and Printed by Field Bros. (London) Ltd, S.E.25. 0. Scarce souvenir blotter for 1947-48 . [12pp.] . Grey card cover with red text and illustrations. Covers lightly soiled and rubbed. Staples rusted. Adverts to inside of the front cover and to both sides of the rear cover. Parochial information on the first 3 pages, including : "Vicar: The Rev. S. J. Matthews.. Assistant Priest: The Rev. O. M. Brooke Clarke.." Other pages include: "Dates To Remember" (blank) ; and four pages of green blotting paper (also blank). G+ ** " St Bartholomew's church is unusual for several reasons, which are all to varying degrees apparent to the casual observer. Firstly, its setting. It stands with Victorian terraced houses all around. Apart from a small Methodist church a block away, there are no other significant buildings. It is a very domestic setting that lends the church a high degree of grandeur. This is Rose Hill, a Victorian railway suburb. Derby Road railway station lies just 100m away up Rose Hill Road. The church is slightly later in date than many of the houses, consecrated in 1895 and completed in 1907. The architect was Charles Spooner, who seems to have had an Italian hilltop village in mind, rather than anything from this side of the Alps. The great flamboyante east window of this fine building overlooks vegetable plots and garden sheds, just as he intended it should. The red-brick exterior was planned to be offset by a tower, but this was never built. You can see where it would have been, to the north west. A lawn is there now. St Bartholomew was Charles Spooner's first church. He built it for his aunt Anna Spooner, who had been born Anna Cobbold. She came from a branch of the famous Ipswich family which had provided a number of Suffolk High Churchmen, the most famous of whom was Richard Cobbold, rector of Wortham and author of Margaret Catchpole, among other books. She was married to Edward Spooner, rector of Hadleigh, and her nephew George Cobbold was the first vicar of St Bartholomew, which seems to have been intended from the start. The church was provided as Ipswich's first purpose-built, thorough-going Anglo-Catholic church, a tradition it has maintained to a degree up until today." - Suffolk Churches by Simon Knott.

Bury St Edmunds: Privately printed by John Crawford, 2014 . 0. Limited edition No. 44 of 50 copies only.11.0" x 8.5" x 0.25". [4pp.]/ff.31 . (31 leaves printed on one [recto] side only). Very good condition. This is a facsimile of the original book produced in 2014 . ** N.B. : Excerpt from Suffolk And Norfolk Life November 2013 - "The original book was found in amongst a collection of old books. It was bound in vellum and had the following title to the front cover: "To The Glorious Dead, In Proud And Thankful Memory Of The Men From Bury St Edmunds Who Went To The Great War And Laid Down Their Lives In The Cause Of Freedom 1914-1919". The book is essentially a typed list, in alphabetical order, and the occasional mistake and correction can be seen within the text. There is no author's name in the book so we will never know the origins of this fine record. Each entry gives the individual's name, rank and regiment. It was done over 30 pages, although three of the pages are blank. Page 31 has a handwritten list of the people killed during the air raid on Bury St. Edmunds on 1st April 1916." The original book was donated to the Suffolk Records Office.
