CHRISTOPHER ISHERWOOD
Prater Violet. With a dust wrapper design by Jean Ross.
Methuen, London, 1946. 1st Edition. Hardcover. ISBN: 0252004787. The first printing of the first UK edition (which was preceded by the US edition of 1945 which featured a significantly less interesting dust wrapper design). 8vo. 102pp. Purple cloth lettered in green at spine. Spine ends lightly rubbed and with a little light spotting to the top edge. A very good copy in somewhat dust marked and soiled non-price-clipped pictorial dust wrapper with several tiny closed tears and a sliver of loss. The wrapper features a striking design by Jean Ross, purportedly the basis for Isherwoods Berlin stories character 'Sally Bowles'. Contemporary former owner name and date inked to the head of the front free endpaper, and a second inked inscription (dated 1953) to the title verso. A novel based on Isherwood's experience as a screenwriter on the British Gaumont film 'Little Friend' (1934), which serves as a springboard for his views on life, the commercialization of art and Nazism. Very Good/Very Good.
