Lacks first blank leaf. Title-page becoming loose at head; title words ‘Thomas ... Turner’ gathered by a left brace. Final two leaves becoming loose at foot. Very minor dusting. Crisp and clean. Thomas Whitebread, 1618-79, became an English Jesuit missionary. In 1678 as Provincial, he refused to admit Titus Oates as a member of the Society. In retaliation Oates conceived the ‘Popish Plot’ against Whitebread who was arrested and finally tried on 13 June 1679. On the perjured evidence of Oates, William Bedloe and Stephen Dugdale, Whitebread and four others were found guilty of conspiracy to murder Charles II. They were all hung, drawn and quartered at Tyburn on 30 June 1679. Following the execution Whitebread’s remains were buried in St Giles-in-the-Fields and in 1929 he was beatified. In 1678 Wakeman was perjured by Titus Oates and another, who accused him of conspiring to kill the King and place his brother James, Duke of York on the throne. An Act to enable the inhabitants of the Parish of Saint Paul Covent Garden, in the County of Middlesex, to purchase or hire a Convenient Piece of Ground for the Purpose or erecting a Workhouse thereon for the Reception and Employment of the Poor of the said Parish; and for providing an additional Burial Ground for the Use of the said Parish 14 Pages (plus titlepage) - 31 x 20 cms Dis-bound from a volume of Acts and held together by the remains on the old binding and may show traces of the old leather and stitching. Paper a little browned The Cleveland Street Workhouse was built on an H plan on the eastern side of Cleveland Street between 1775-8, by the parish of St Paul Covent Garden, on land leased from the Bedford Estate. The construction of the building resulted from the intercession of the Duke of Bedford’s steward Robert Palmer, the same man who together with Duchess Gertrude planned and realized the construction of Bedford Square and Gower Street. The original Act of Parliament was obtained in May 1775. The building was initially designed to accommodate 200 paupers, but the plan was modified prior to construction to accommodate a greater number.. Good .
