GIBBONS, JOHN
Tramping to Lourdes - Being Some Account of the Adventures That Befell John Gibbons of Hornsey in Middlesex, in a Pilgrimage Undertaken Through Anjou and Auvergne, Quercy, Bearn and Bigorre, with Other Foreign Parts, in the 47th Year of His Age
London, Methuen. 1932. Hard Cover, 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Dark blue titkles on light blue cloth boards which have a minor mark to front but no wear. Internally there is a contemporay name and address to front pastedown, foxing to closed edges else very clean, tight and unmarked. 213 pages. Map to front endpaper. Seventh edition (first was 1929). Introduction by H.V. Morton. A simple and beautiful book, written by an ordinary man who decided that it would be good for his soul if he went on a pilgrimage. He tramped his way from St. Malo to Lourdes with little money and not being able to speak French. He decided on a pilgrimage as his little home in a London suburb was besieged by rate and rent collectors, his wife was in a nursing home and their newly-born child was ill. He regarded all this as a sign of divine disapproval and that his sins had been visited upon the child. He went to the editor of a Catholic newspaper and explained his desire to go to Lourdes and pray for his child. The editor agreed to pay him a small weekly sum for a weekly contribution, on the strict understanding that every mile of the journey be on foot. NOT EX LIB. Very Good/No Jacket.
