How It Was - a North Lancashire Parish in the Seventeenth Century.
Silverdale, Lancashire. Mourholme Local History Society. 1998. lst edn. Large format paperback. 212 pages, plus notes and reference, index, and list of inhabitants mentioned in the text. B.w. illustrations. Maps. Fine in fine papercover with slight fading to spine. Unread book from new stock. The old parish of Warton, which included Silverdale, the Yealands, Borwick, Priest Hutton and Carnforth, supported a population of 1,200. By examing hundreds of 17th century documents members of the Mourholme Local Historic Society have patiently pieced together the evidence that shows how these people lived. Almost everyone was engaged in farming, even if they had other occupations as well. In bad years the poorest went short of food and were vulnerable to disease, including plague. The houses were heated with peat and the staple diet was oats. Hemp was grown for its fibre which was used to make coarse working clothes, sacks and rope. These were turbulent times politically and in religious life, and Catholics and Quakers were liable to suffer for their religious beliefs. ISBN: 0-9534298-0-6.
