ANDERSON, JAMES
The Black Book of Kincardineshire; containing Lists of the Covenanters confined in Dunnottar Castle in 1685; with an Account of the Persecution of Episcopacy; And other Miscellaneous Papers connected with the County.
William Johnston, Stonehaven, 1843. Hardcover. Fair. Contemporary cloth, with remains of printed paper label. Title page has marking from old cellotape, now removed. A number of other pages have been repaired in a similar manner in the past (they probably didn't know any better). A little foxing, but generally clean and sound. Certainly an uncommon work. A collection of ancient papers from the County of Kincardineshire in the North-east of Scotland, including details of criminal trials and punishments from 1699 and 1700; lists of Covenanters imprisoned in Dunnottar Castle; Butcher Cumberland's punishment of Episcopalian supporters of Bonnie Prince Charlie at Stonehaven, and dozens of miscellaneous documents regarding militias, taxes, the scarcity of food in the county as the army passed through on its way to Culloden; trade; ancient gravestones; the Regalia of Scotland; archaeology and the finding of ancient coins; geology, and lists of birds, fish and shells found on the coast. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 202 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Antiquarian & Rare; Special Interest; New Arrivals; History. Inventory No: 258411.
