DAVIS HOWARD CHARLES
Death in the Scillies
John Long, UK, 1968. First Edition, Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Good. 184 pages. With a score of novels to his name Howard Charles Davis does not need to be introduced to readers who enjoy fast-action thrillers which are full of colour and suspense and Death in the Scillies makes one of his most entertaining and quick-moving stories. What had happened to an expert yachtsman who had set sail from Hugh Town, St. Mary's, and whose unmanned boat had drifted the next morning on to the Seven Sisters Reef? After two months his body has not been found and Martin Yates, an ex-marine who had been brought up in the Scillies, is called in to solve the mystery. Yates learns that a private enquiry agent of doubtful character is recruiting a bodyguard for a millionaire socialite with a home on St. Mary's -and also that both had stayed at the same hotel as the missing man. What is the connection-and why should bodyguards be needed in the Isles of Scilly, one of the most peaceful corners of the earth? Book - in brown coloured boards with gilt lettering - Very Good - front endpaper may not be original though obviously not recent as usual slight difference between the areas covered by the front flap is apparent, slight spotting to rear endpapers, otherwise contents clean, bright and tightly bound. Dust Jacket - LOOKS BETTER THAN IT SOUNDS SO PLEASE - Good Plus Plus - some rubbing and creasing to edges and corners, strengthening to verso top of the spine, slight marking to the white background to the back of the jacket, as usual red background to spine has faded to orange black lettering and detail still clear and bright. A nice copy of a relatively hard book to find. Size: 7.5 inches tall by 5 inches. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Crime Fiction; Inventory No: A144-1065.

W.W. COLLINS
"Rambles beyond Railways; or, Notes in Cornwall taken a-foot. With Illustrations by Henry C. Brandling."
"Richard Bentley, 1851" "8vo., First Edition, with a tinted lithographed frontispiece (skilfully mounted on pale cartridge) and 11 tinted lithographed plates; late-nineteenth century half calf, neatly rebacked with new endpapers to style, old blind-tooled backstrip laid down, original gilt-ruled morocco labels preserved (title-label with two gilt letters reinforced), sprinkled edges, an unusually bright, clean and carefully restored copy with virtually no trace of the usual foxing. The plates were engraved by M & N Hanhart from illustrations by Brandling. This is the scarce original edition of Collins' third book, following his biography of his father 'Memoirs of the Life of William Collins' (2v, 1848) and his first novel 'Antonina' (3v., 1850). It is arguably his best-remembered work, together with his two later novels 'The Woman in White' (1860) and 'The Moonstone' (1868). Very nice copy of an uncommon and notable account, and a mainstay of any Cornish collection. Sadleir, 'Excursions' p.137, gives the date of publication (from the Bentley Catalogue) as 30 January 1851; Anderson, p.70; CBEL III, p.481; Parrish, pp.14-16; Wolff, 1374."
