GEORGE CORNELIUS GORHAM
The History and Antiquities of Eynesbury and St Neot's in Huntingdonshire, and St Neot's in the Country of Cornwall
London - Lackington, Hughes, Harding, Mavor, And Jones. 1820. Hardcover. Book, A history of this contraversial priest's birthplace, as well as its namesake in Cornwall. Gorham studied at Queens' College Cambridge, and was a competent antiquarian. This intruiging local history is a unique examination of small English localities. He is best known, however, for the controversy he caused within the Church and country at large. He refused to accept that the sacrament of baptism alone made a child one of the children of God. Denied his curacy because of this, he took his case all the way to the secular Privy council, which ruled in his favour. This judgement caused fourteen prominent Anglicans to defect to the Roman Catholic Church. This copy belonged to Stuart Piggot, of the University of Edinburgh. There is a handwritten note by him included, from which it is clear that he sent it to a correspondent who wished to find out more about the St Neot's bar-lip shard. The correspondent, Mr C F tebbutt, was a well known local historian who published a history of St Neots. Condition: In a cloth binding with paper covered boards. Externally somewhat worn, with wear to the edges and spine and marking to the boards. The spine label is heavily damaged with significant loss. With a contemporary ink signature to the front pastedown. The front hinge is weak. Internally a little cockled, and lightly spotted here and there throughout. The binding is loosening in places. overall: GOOD ONLY. GOOD ONLY.
