"[Sale Catalogue of] Books, Manuscripts, Photographs & Maps. 13 November 1998."
"Bonhams, 1998" "4to., with numerous facsimiles (several full-page) in the text; original printed wrappers, a fine copy. Lot 381 comprised the Records and Deeds of Chawton Manor, with Godmersham Park, and of the Knight, May, Brodnax and Austen families from 1304 until 1836. The cataloguing occupies 16 full pages including 6 large facsimiles and many part-transcriptions; in addition the catalogue's front wrappers carries a fine coloured facsimile of the front board of the folio Chawton Manor Book.''Chawton will never be an ordinary village. For the last eight years of her life Jane Austen lived in a cottage on the High Street, which now attracts 50,000 pilgrims each year, while her brother lived in the manor house.' (Christopher Woodward, 'Daily Telegraph', p.23, 23 August 1998). In this house she wrote or revised all her major novels. Her brother Edward, who had been given into adoption by the Knight family whose name he took, also owned Godmersham Park, which he inherited in 1797 and where Jane frequently stayed. The two estates have acquired an almost talismanic power approaching that of Stratford and can be seen as epitomising the history of England. Their history is told by the present records."
