EDWIN HODDER
George Fife Angas; Father and Founder of South Australia
London - Hodder and Stoughton. 1891, First edition. Hardcover. Book, A first edition of thebiography of one of the significant figures in the foundation of colonial Australia. Angas established the South Australian Company, and later in his life he emigrated to Australia and served on the first South Australian Legislative Council. In the preface the author justifies his choice of subject thus: he originated the South Australian Company, the Bank of South Australia, the National Provincial Bank of England, and the Union Bank of Australia; he fought the battle of the slaves in Honduras and the Mosquito Coast, and obtained an act of Parliament for their emancipation; he circumvented a reigning monarch and stayed a despotic religious persecution; his foresight and shrewdness won for Great Britain the possession of New Zealand as a colony. This list continues much further. This work as published only twelve years after his death, and represents the first attempt to establish his reputation for posterity. Condition: In the original cloth with gilt titles to the spine and a glassine wrap. Externally sound, though with some wear to the extremities and around the spine. The glassine wrap is completely intact, having been added later. With a stain to the foredge. Thehinges arestarting but still reasonably firm. The frontispiece and first few pages are stained. Age-toned towards the edges, but otherwise generally clean. The binding is beginning to loosen in places. Overall: GOOD. Good.
