London, John B. Day, 1876 1st, 1st issue Hardback, Large quarto, (approx 11 x 8.5 inches.) Pebbled dark green cloth with elaborate gilt and black pictorial design and titles to front board. Gilt piscatorial designs (a fish, 2 mayflies, and a lily pad) and titles to spine. Beveled edge boards, brown endpapers, and full-gilt page edging. In very good condition; some minor handling to cloth, edges and corners a little rubbed, ends of spine rubbed and chipped at top. Some minor rubbing to boards. Endpapers clean, small split between front endpaper nr top edge. Inside pages all very clean and bright, one or two minor foxing spots else clean and tight. Flies and materials all complete and in very good undamaged conditions (with serrated white fixing-tabs.). This copy is signed by the Editor on top edge of main title page “W. Peard, Esq. M.D. with the editor’s kind regards.” Else an excellent and stunning copy. [i-ix], x-xiii, 1-91pp. Illustrated with all flies and tying materials present on 6 leaves (22 sunken mounts). Flies and tying materials fresh and unblemished. (This 1st issue does not contain the Two colour Litho plates. - instead is a B&W facsimile frontis tipped-in.) A very good copy of the first fishing book to include examples of hand-tied flies. The publishing history of this title is complicated, with this being the FIRST issue; without colour chromo-litho plates (and different serrated white-tabs to affix flies). The flies contained in this copy are all exceptionally nice, especially the final two mayflies (now extinct species.) Another issue point noted by R.B. Marston (author and editor of Fishing Gazette) states; “I knew Mr. W.H. Aldam - he told me that all copies of this book which do not contain the full page coloured plates are spurious & piratical with incorrrect fly materials. RBM.” - hinting that the first issue is being not quite complete (without plates.) (Fly materials are still presumed to be correct and all are present and complete in this issue.).
