COOPER, CHARLES HENRY
Memorials of Cambridge ( Volumes 1 & 2 )
William Metcalfe, Cambridge, 1860. New edition, Hardcover, Illustrated by: John Le Keux / Frith & Co.. Very Good/No Dust Jacket. A major revision of the 1841 first edition. This edition is notable for the addition of real photographs, by Frith, as some of the illustrations. The Le Keux engravings from the earlier edition are used again. The two volumes have undergone much restoration. The spines appear to be the publisher's own red morocco gilt design, presumably a 'deluxe' option. They are laid onto newer morocco spines. One spine has had a very skilful new section inserted. The matching boards look recent. Several of the plates have been mounted on card to strengthen them. There is damage to the edges of a few plates and a few text pages. Scattered foxing throughout which is most noticeable on the photo mounts. Tight and sound copy. Vol. I has 53 steel engravings ( correct as per list ), 10 ( of 11 ) photographs and no etched plates ( there should be two ). Vol. II has 43 ( of 45 ) steel engravings, 7 ( of 9 ) photographs and 5 etched plates ( correct as per list ). xx + 403 + xvi + 393 pages. Approx. size 9.5" by 6.5". Sold as a collection of engravings and early real photographs of Cambridge 'with all faults'. 'Volumes 1 and 2 of the work are a comprehensive guide to the Cambridge colleges, while Volume 3 ( published later ie 1866 and NOT present here ) is almost entirely concerned with the history of other landmarks throughout the city, such as the Fitzwilliam Museum, the Guildhall and the Botanic Garden. It was published in 1860, just six years before Cooper's death, and stands as a detailed and fully illustrated guide to Cambridge at that time.' Illustrator: John Le Keux / Frith & Co.. Quantity Available: 1. Category: History; Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request. Inventory No: 26685.
