Edinburgh - William Blackwood. 1821. Hardcover. Book, Leatherbound volume with gilt tooling to the edges of the boards, marble paper pastedowns, and marbled foredge. John Galt (2 May 1779 11 April 1839) was a Scottish novelist. Born in Irvine, North Ayrshire, Scotland, Galt was the son of a naval captain. When his family relocated to Malden in 1789, Galt became an apprentice and junior clerk, writing essays and stories for local journals in his spare time. He moved to London in 1804 to seek his fortune. In 1809, Galt began studying law at Lincoln's Inn. While subsequently traveling in Europe, Galt met and befriended Lord Byron. On his return to London, Galt wrote an account of his travels, which met with moderate success. Decades later, he would also publish the first full biography of Lord Byron. He also published the first biography of the painter Benjamin West, The Life and Studies of Benjamin West (1816, expanded 1820). Condition: The binding is tight and firm with both covers and all pages attached, although the boards are attached by the cords only and could become detached in the post. There is some wear to the extremities including bumping to the corners, rubbing to the boards, and the complete loss of the spine. Internally the pages are clean and bright with the occasional handling mark and isolated spot. There is a bookplate to the front pastedown. Overall the volume is infair condition externally but goodcondition internally. Very Good.
