[ATTRIBUTED TO CHARLES DAVENANT]
The Old and Modern Whig Truly Represented; Being a Second Part of His Picture and a Real Vindication of His Excellency the Earl of Rochester,... . and of Several Other True Patriots of Our Establish'd Church, English Liberty and Ancient Monarchy...
London: Printed in the Year, 1702. First Edition. Disbound. Stab stiched, some wear to page edges especially on corners but margins wide and text clear, Pp.34, 35, 37 & 39 are omitted in numbering; the text and register are continuous. Charles Davenant (1656-1714) was a political economist and writer who was opposed to the whig junto that had supported William III and the 'Glorious Revolution'. As with other tories, Davenant was interested in limiting the power of William III, most obviously by looking to reduce the 'standing army' and by limiting the crown's rights to dispose of forfeited estates in Ireland. Davenants writings in opposition to the Whigs led to gossip that he was in the pay of the Jacobites, 4to 11" - 13" tall, [2] 69 [i.e. 65] [1] pp.
