BRANDON, PETER:
The South Downs
Phillimore & Co, Chichester, 2006 Reprint, quarto, 148 pages illustrated in colour and black & white. Fine cloth hard back with a near fine unclipped dust jacket. No inscriptions or marks. An excellent one-volume summary to the life of the South Downs over the millennia in which human beings and landscape have interacted. Brandon covers geomorphology, natural history, agriculture and administrative history in his exploration of how the downland landscapes evolved - the wooded western Downs and the more familiar short grassland of the eastern Downs, shaped by centuries of sheep-farming - and shows how they were part of a nexus of trade and agriculture that stretched to much of the rest of the county, south to the sea and north into the Weald. Heartbreakingly, much of the unique grassland of the eastern Downs was lost not to eighteenth-century enclosure or Victorian "improvement" - the usual culprits - but to closure for wartime training and the post-war push for increased agricultural yields that paid farmers to plough up fragile grassland that had developed over centuries and turn it over to cereal production. A detailed analysis of how the landscape evolved, a thought-provoking analysis of planning issues and the general question of how a landscape can be preserved.
